Speaker Bios

Dr. Robert E. Larson, President, UCGEC; Managing Director, Woodside Fund.

Robert Larson is Co-founder and Managing Director of the Woodside Fund. Dr. Larson has enjoyed a challenging and fruitful career in the exceptionally broad exposure to the most recent developments in these technologies. Dr. Larson was co-founder, President, and CEO of Systems Control. In addition, he was President of the international Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE). Dr. Larson has worked for IBM, Hughes Aircraft, and SRI International. He was also a Consulting Professor at Stanford University in the Engineering-Economic Systems Department for over 20 years.

He received his Ph.D. and M.S. degrees from Stanford University, and a B.S. degree from MIT, all in Electrical Engineering. He has written six textbooks and 140 technical papers on software and computer systems.

 

Robert Wu, Chairman and CEO of the US-China Green Energy Council (UCGEC)

Robert Wu is Chairman and CEO of UCGEC; Co-Chairman and founding president of the Berkeley Chinese Alumni International Association. Mr. Wu is a veteran of the Computer and Semiconductor Industry in both the U.S. and China. He received a BSEE with highest honors from University of California, Berkeley and his MSEE from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1954.

He was a project manager in semiconductor development for the Transitron Semiconductor Corporation before returning to China in 1956. In China, Mr. Wu as a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences had played a leading role in the early development of the Institute of Semiconductors, the Institute of Computing Technology, and the Institute of Microelectronics. He was the technical director in developing China's first transistor, the first transistorized mainframe and its first microcomputer with silicon IC. He is recognized as a founding member of China's computer and semiconductor industry.

Mr. Wu returned to US in 1978 and joined HP Labs. He facilitated the establishment of HP China, the first joint venture between the US and China. Early in 1982, he supported immediate VLSI implementation on RISC architecture and became the project manager of HP's first RISC microprocessor. In 1985, he made the initial proposal to utilize the vast amount of cost-effective manpower resources in China and India, and became the program manager of HP International Contract Programming. Mr. Wu co-founded Silicon Magic Corporation in 1994, where he served as the Director of Human Resources, Planning, and China Business Development until 1999.

 

Dr. Peng Fang, President & CEO, GCL Solar Energy Inc.; Board of Directors, UCGEC

Dr. Peng Fang is President and CEO, GCL Solar Energy Inc. with more than 20 years of executive management experience from leading global technology companies at the solar and semiconductor industries in the U.S. and China. Previously Dr. Fang was CEO of JA Solar (NasdaqGS: JASO) that he built the largest solar cell and components company and best financial performance company during the 2012 industry downturn. Dr. Fang was 2011 Forbes “One of World’s 7 Most Powerful People in Energy”, and 2011, 2012 China Top 10 Solar Energy Leaders. He was a member of China President Hu’s delegation and spoke on China-American Clean Energy Strategy Summit in DC, 2011.
He was formerly president of Huahong NEC, one of the largest semiconductor foundries in China. He has also held various technology and management positions at Applied Materials and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) in the U.S.

Dr. Fang received his PhD and MSEE degrees from the University of Minnesota. He was also a postdoctoral research fellow at the EECS Department of UC Berkeley. Dr. Fang was chairman of the IEEE Electron Devices Society, Santa Clara Valley Chapter. He is a board of directors, UCGEC.

 

Xiaofeng Zhang, Regional Marketing Director, Howard Industries Inc.;
Sr. Vice President, Board of Directors, UCGEC

Xiaofeng is a Regional Marketing Director, Howard Industries Inc. She has over 25 years of experience in the areas of Smart Grid, Distribution Automation, Demand Response, Electricity Market and Renewable Energy. She has worked in various capacities with global leading companies, such as Director of Marketing and Admin, JA Solar USA; Sr. Project Manager at Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E), Product Manager and China Marketing Manager at ABB Inc., Senior Engineer at Siemens and at Systems Control, Palo Alto, USA. Previously she worked with the Chinese Electric Power Research Institute (CEPRI) in Beijing, where her OPF application software won a National Scientific Technology Award.

She has published widely and recently served as a panelist at industrial conferences, such as she was Smart Grid panelist & panel moderator for UCGEC 2010 & 2013 conferences in China, as well as a panelist on “Market-Based Demand Response” at IEEE 2010 General Meeting, USA and CICED 2014, Shenzhen, China. She holds a B.S. and M.S. in Electrical Engineering and was a PhD Candidate at the Chinese Electric Power Research Institute (CEPRI).

Ms. Zhang is a Senior Member of IEEE. She is Sr. Vice President of the US-China Green Energy Council (UCGEC) and is co-chair on Smart Grid steering committee. She is very active in San Francisco Bay Area communities and has served various non-profit organizations, including Board Chairwoman (2013 to present) and President (2006 to 2008), Silicon Valley Women (SVWA).

 

Dr. Stephen Lee, Board of Directors, UCGEC; Previously Senior Technical Executive, Grid Operations and Planning, EPRI, USA

Dr. Lee has over 40 years of electric power industry experience.  He received all his degrees from M.I.T. in Electrical Engineering.

He had worked for a number of consulting companies and performed R&D. With EPRI for 12 years, he managed and directed technical research programs for power system analysis, grid planning and operations. As Senior Technical Executive, he was considered one of the Thought Leaders of EPRI. Dr. Lee also actively participated in activities of the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC). For one year (2010-2011), he was an Executive Managing Consultant for IBM Global Business Services in China.

 

Dr. Charles Wells, Center of Excellence Engineer, OSIsoft, Inc.

Dr. Wells helps OSIsoft customers maximize value from their software while assisting with the development of new features and functions in OSIsoft products. With over 30 years experience in real-time control and monitoring, Dr. Wells published over 50 technical papers, awarded nine US Patents, and co-authored two textbooks. Dr. Wells originated the large scale distributed generation applications with Detroit Edison using the DEW software developed at EPRI, designed Phasor applications with Entergy, and compliance monitoring systems with California Independent System Operator. He developed and patented new technology in detecting power grid stability in real time and systems for improving efficiency of pulverized coal fired boilers. He developed carbon efficiency reduction programs using United Nations approved methods. He has also applied innovative OSIsoft technology to Pacific Ocean Environmental measurement systems, transformer condition monitoring systems, on-line continuous flight recording systems and large scale traffic problem forecasting solutions. At Systems Control, Inc Dr. Wells was a leading developer of large scale state estimators and worked for many years in the field of sparse matrix inversion techniques. Dr. Wells participated in the development and use of dynamic Kalman filters for real time grid fault detection.

Dr. Wells received his BS in Chemical Engineering at Vanderbilt University; and a MS in Chemical Engineering majoring in Polymer science and PhD in Electrical Engineering at Washington University specializing. He is a registered Professional Engineer in Chemical Engineering and Control Systems.

 

Dr. Tiancang Du, Executive Office Director, Guangdong Electric Power Design Institute (GEDI), China Energy Engineering Construction Group

Dr. Du is the executive office director of Guangdong Electric Power Design Institute (GEDI), which is affiliated with China Energy Engineering Construction Group. He has over 13 years experience in the areas of Electric Power Systems, Smart Grid and Renewable Energy. Since joining in GEDI in 2008, Dr Du has lead and managed various projects regarding smart grid and distributed energy resources, communication and automation systems of power grid, overall solutions of different types of power plants, including hydropower, nuclear power, natural gas, solar, onshore and offshore wind power plants. Before joining in GEDI, Dr Du was fiber laboratory supervisor in Shenzhen SDG Information CO. LTD, where he led the research and testing of optical fibers and electric cables.

Dr. Du is currently a visiting scholar in Stanford University. He obtained his Ph.D. from South China University of Technology in Guangzhou, China and his M.S. and B.S. from Wuhan University in Wuhan, China. 

 

Dr. Gonçalo Cardoso, Post-Doc at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory

Dr. Cardoso is currently a Post-Doc at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory working for the Grid Integration Group of the Energy Storage and Distributed Resources Department. He received a M.Sc. in Civil Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico, Technical University of Lisbon, Portugal, and later Ph.D. in Sustainable Energy Systems from the same institution within the MIT-Portugal Program.

He focuses on Distributed Energy Resources Investment and Planning, having worked with DER-CAM since 2009, where he had several contributions including the implementation of stochastic capabilities, electric vehicle fleet modeling, critical loads, heat pumps, investment subsidies and feed-in tariffs within the California Self Generation Incentive Program, among others.

 

Dr. Liuxi (Calvin) Zhang, Sr. Distribution Systems Engineer, Nexant, Inc.

Dr. Liuxi (Calvin) Zhang is a Senior Distribution Systems Engineer in Nexant, Inc, where he leads the research and software development of power distribution/Smart Grid systems modeling and analytics. He was Vice President of North American Chinese Power Professional Association (NACPPA) from 2011 to 2013. He also co-foundered and served as President of IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES) at Northeastern University in 2011.

Dr. Zhang obtained his Ph.D. from Northeastern University, Boston, MA and his M.S. and B.S. from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai, China. He is the recipient of 2013 IEEE PES Outstanding Young Engineer Award in Boston Section and 2012 IEEE Student Achievement Award in Boston Section.
