Roundtable Forum 1  (Gold Lounge)

► Renewable Energy and Global Energy Internet

Moderator:

  • Dr. Jeffrey Chapman, President and Co-founder, EnDimensions LLC;
  • Dr. Calvin Zhang, UCGEC

To combat global climate change and reduce pollution, the future electric power grid will be powered mainly by distributed energy resources (DERs) from renewable energy instead of traditional fossil fuel. To enable this energy transition, different innovative technologies, such as information technology, big data analytics and artificial intelligence, will be applied to power grids to incorporate high penetration of renewable energy and their real time operation for transmission and distribution. Recently, the concept of Energy Internet has been proposed and widely adopted globally for the future power grid with high penetration of DERs. In this forum, experts from US, China and Europe will share their visions and insights on this specific topic.

Moderator:

  • Julie Steury, Stem Inc.;
  • Dr. Stephen Lee, UCGEC

Participants are asked to address the following questions:

  • From your organization’s perspective, what is the most important and useful application that will come out of the commercialization of Internet of Things?
  • How will Big Data work together with the Internet of Things to create valuable information which will increase economic and social benefits?

Roundtable Forum 3 (Main Hall)

► New Energy Vehicles, Energy Markets and Demand Side Management

Moderator:

  • Jeffrey Ball, Stanford University
  • Dr. Shanshan Liu, UCGEC

With Tesla Model 3 orders nearing 400,000 and Tesla being only one of many electric vehicle manufacturers, we know that in the near future, the number of electric vehicles will grow considerably. While they impose potential challenges on grid operations and planning, they also represent appreciable opportunities to be utilized as demand side management and fully realize the benefit of the electrification of the transportation. This will require integration with energy markets, so that the charging of EVs can be guided and controlled to help meet consumers’ demands through load shifting and achieve energy efficiency and conservation.

In this forum, we would like to discuss and explore the following:

  • Gaps in energy market policy to facilitate such DSM
  • Gaps in technology to enable such DSM
  • A holistic energy market framework to encourage future DSM

Silicon Valley Innovation and Smart City: Silicon Valley Mayors, Venture Investments and Entrepreneurs Developing Green Energy to Combat Climate Change

Moderator:

  • Dr. Zhiqian Bo, State Grid Corporation of China
  • Dr. James Caldwell, UCGEC

Participants are asked to address the following questions:

  • Given the explosion of Big Data, IoT, Distributed Generation, DSR, and creative thinking, what new business models are you most excited about and why?
  • The Smart Cities Council has published Smart Cities Open Data Guide, which provides advice, best practices and tools for creating a data-driven City. Council observed that Open Data is “The Mother Lode Just waiting to be mined.” What Silicon Valley innovations for using this data do you think are most promising? Do you know of many?
  • There is so much opportunity there that many city leaders find the biggest challenge is “where to start.” What do you see as the most promising area to start mining and using this data?
  • One of the big challenges for sustainable growth is to provide jobs and affordable housing for the city to keep it healthy and prevent it from going bankrupt as Detroit did because it could not provide housing or jobs for its citizens.  What opportunities do you see for creating economic growth, jobs and housing for resilient cities?
